Out of the fog of Homecoming Week, something that resembled a volleyball contest emerged Thursday evening. When the dust had settled the mighty Lancers prevailed over the visiting Defenders of Macomb Christian School. OCS started strong, racing to a 25-13 win in the first set, but the Defenders put up a good fight, winning the second set 25-19. Oakland went on to win the third set 25-20, and the fourth set 25-13 to claim the victory, three sets to one.
After splitting the first two sets, the third set was crucial in deciding the final outcome. Still riding the momentum after the second set win, the Defenders ran out to a 18-12 lead. At this point the Lancers’ senior captain, Grace Shelata, came to the rescue. She registered four aces and ran off ten straight points on her serve, erasing the deficit and staking the Lancers to a 22-18 lead.
In the fourth and final set, Macomb Christian jumped out to an 8-1 lead, but then the Lancers’ defense got stingy. Offensively, Logan Hoover ran off three aces and seven points while serving to stake the Lancers to an 11-9 lead. From there, the Lancers cruised to a 25-13 victory.
With the victory, the Lancers moved to 4-0 in the MIAC conference, and 8-10-2 overall. Next week will be critical in the conference race as the Lancers host undefeated Inter City on Tuesday and Roeper on Friday; both contests begin at 6:30.
