The OCS volleyball team defeated conference rival, Inter-City Baptist on Tuesday night, three sets to one, 25-12, 26-24, 13-25, 25-22. The victory leaves the Lady Lancers as the only undefeated team in conference play and in the driver’s seat for the conference title.
The Lancers got off to a fast start with aggressive serves and strong attacks which put the visiting Chargers on their heels. That aggression resulted in a 25-12 opening set victory. However, Inter City wouldn’t go down easy. In the second set, the two teams traded blows before ICB ran out to a 23-20 lead. Undaunted, the scrappy Lancers battled back and took a 26-24 win. With the score tied at 24, the Lancers executed their offense with a pair of pretty “bump, set, spike” sequences, each ending with a Kaylee Page kill.
Down two sets to none, Inter City found their rhythm in the third set, winning 25-13 to get back into the match. In a seesaw fourth set, the Lancers jumped out to a 7-2 lead only to see the Chargers come back and take an ominous 21-17 lead. But the Lancers dug deep and prevailed 25-22 behind a nice service run by Hailee Ide, and another final point kill by Kaylee Page.
Talking about the comeback set victories, Grace Shelata said, “One thing that allowed us to come back when we did was our serve runs.” Not only did Hailee Ide have a timely service run, co-captains Grace Shelata and Beana Lucido had long runs.
Katie Hopkins led the team with 19 assists and chipped in 5 kills. Grace Shelata and Hailee Ide each had 25 digs, and Kaylee Page led the team with 13 kills. Logan Hoover didn’t miss a serve in 7 attempts.
The Lancers improved their record to 9-10-2 and 5-0 in the conference.
