The Lancer boys’ basketball team started the season with a bang. The Lancers defeated Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 56-36 in Oakland Christian’s home opener. The game was a rematch of the last three MHSAA District Final games in which the Lancers prevailed.
The game started slowly as both teams were showing first game jitters trying to get into a flow. The Lancers were able to start their scoring with a couple of free throws from junior Lake Patterson. The gates then were opened with points from Ford, McAllister, and Siminski to end the quarter up 13-4. Our Lady of Lakes Ross started to heat up, and the Lakers were able to win the second quarter 11-10 as the Lancers went through a small offensive lull. The Lancers still held the 23-15 halftime lead.
When the third quarter began, it was all Oakland Christian. The defensive pressure of the Lancers improved, as well as, control of the boards led by junior Keith McAllister and freshman Jack Currie. Currie also did some damage on the defensive end by protecting the basket with 5 blocks. The Lancers were led in scoring during the third quarter by a trio of juniors – Daniel Siminski, Lake Patterson, and Keith McAllister. The Lancers outscored the Lakers 23-9 in the quarter in which the Lakers saw Grant Ross score all 9 of the Lakers points and had 14 of their 24 points at the time. Unfortunately, for the Lakers Ross fouled out with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game on a drive by freshman Jack Currie. The Lancers then held on to defeat the Lakers 56-36.
The Lancers were led in scoring by Daniel Siminski (14), Lake Patterson (12), and Carson Ford (9). The Lakers were led by Grant Ross’ game-high 16 points.
With the win, the Lancers are 1-0 and gave Coach Dennis Hopkins his 300th win as a head coach. The Lancers travel to play Parkway Christian Friday night at 7:00 pm in a non-conference match-up.
